“Haaaaaa, this sucks,” I whine, dropping my head onto the desk.

“Stop complaining, Evangeline, you're distracting me,” Henrique replies while he scans the computer screen. This sneaky guy has been avoiding me for the past few days, but now that we're stuck on the same surveillance shift, he has no escape.

“You knew this was going to happen, didn’t you?” I prod, ignoring his comment.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he dodges, still focused on the screen. He’s monitoring the camera Camille installed in the gang’s hideout hall, but nothing has happened there for the past two hours.

“Come on, Henrique.”

He sighs loudly, leans back dangerously in his chair, and cracks his neck.

“I told you it wasn’t a good time,” he finally says, pulling his gaze away from the screen and scratching his mustache, like he always does when he’s anxious.

“I don’t understand how it went wrong. Our date was absolutely perfect.”

That’s so true. The way she looked at me, that smile, even our kiss. Everything was perfect. So, I can’t understand why she pulled back. Who could this other person be? She hasn’t been seeing anyone for weeks—I know because making fun of her love life is one of our pastimes at the station.

“Camille’s going through a tough time,” he downplays.

“What do you know?” I demand.

“Nothing,” he responds way too quickly, and since he keeps scratching his mustache, I’m sure he’s lying.

“Spill it, Henrique, or the next time you fall asleep in these chairs, I’m shaving off that horrible mustache of yours.”

“My girlfriend likes it,” he protests defensively.

“Come on, tell me,” I plead, giving him my best puppy-dog eyes. Henrique may be a brute, but I know his weak spot: he’s got a soft heart. He sighs again, this time using both hands to rub his face.

“Give her some time, alright? There’s a lot going on in her life—this mission and that woman…”

“What woman?”

“You know, Sophia. She’s getting in her head.”

Sophia?

“No way. Camille would never get involved with a criminal…”

“She hasn’t gotten involved with anyone,” he defends. “But the woman messes with her, you know… She’s her type and all—pretty, tough-looking.”

“No way.”

“Relax, nothing’s going to happen. She’s just stressed,” he insists.

This jerk is right. Sophia. Camille has always had terrible taste in girlfriends—and boyfriends too. It’s like that crazy woman only opens Tinder near prisons. And of course, she would fall for Sophia’s act, and it’s obvious that conniving Sophia would go after her. She’s perfect—gorgeous, charming, and looks incredible in a uniform.

“But they kissed…”

“She told you? Thank God, keeping that secret was driving me insane,” he sighs with relief.

“What do you mean? We all knew they kissed—that’s how Camille got the first bug in… Wait,” I say, realizing what’s going on. “They kissed again?”

Shit. Shit. Shit.

“I... I... didn’t...,” he starts stammering like an idiot, which confirms more of the story than if he’d actually confessed everything.

“Oh my God… they kissed again?”

“It was for the mission,” he downplays, sounding more nervous than the day he thought he lost a kilo of cocaine during a bust.
